Hate getting in front of the camera to a stranger saying 'Ok everyone, now smile'?
Not into posing in a 'gosh that's bright' studio and putting your hand on your brothers shoulder because you 'love each other'?
Want to celebrate your pregnancy but the thought of wearing a lace 'dress' on the beach makes you more nauseous than morning sickness?
Worried the kids won't smile so what's the point of splashing some cash on photos you hate looking back on because the experience was #stess-ful?
Don't want to get married or in a more than two lovers kinda relationship but still want to capture and celebrate your love?
If you said yes to one or more of these than you are in the right place!
When I think of my childhood memories, one of my favourites was the Franklin movie night. Now we all know by now that I love a good movie, but these particular nights had a ritual. Mum would load me and my 4 siblings up in the van and we would venture down to the local Video Ezy or Blockbuster. We would always get the 2 new releases and 5 weekly deal (we all know the one). We all got to pick a weekly each, democratically decide on a new release (with heavy influence on what I wanted as the eldest daughter who naturally had manipulation over the younger 4) and help Mum pick the other new release for Dad, requirement being, 'it has aliens'. She preferred her book! Then we would go home, Mum would split a bag of chips and a bag of lollies between 5 bowls and we would all find a spot on the couch or bean bag.
Now I would love to have one of these movie nights captured by a photographer to look back on. The chaos in the video store, the excitement of what we brought home, the fights over if the snacks were distributed evenly and the joy of getting settled and snuggled in.
What is something you and your family love to do? Perhaps it's get an icecream down the beach on a Friday night? Maybe it is making Christmas cards for your family? Maybe it is just a bbq at Nana's house on a Sunday arvo and a game of basketball. These are the memories that are worth capturing!
Lisa and Tammy were almost ready to welcome their son to the world. They wanted to lock the moment in time with a photoshoot. They really wanted to capture the colours in the Autumn leaves and didn't want a 'traditional' maternity shoot. I asked them what a usual weekend might look for them and it usually involved coffee, walking Charlie, their dog, the local bookshop and a little adventure. We spent a couple of hours together in Stirling, South Australia exploring the local markets, book store and finding the Autumn colours that were going to welcome become their son's birthday colours. These photos don't just show their pregnancy but what a weekend looked like for them before they became parents and they have the photos to show their son what they got up to before he came into the world.
This is a chapter in their story.
-Me,
Laura Franklin
The goodest of boys
I noticed I had a several couples who became families or families who became bigger families reach out time and time again. I had a special spot in my heart for these shoots because of the established connection with them. The adults knew me, the kids knew me and we could just have some fun without the awkward get to know you phase. I also loved it when it was an event, because the friends and family knew and trusted me too. That's why I wanted Mirrorball Hearts to be a club! Community is important to me and I want the people I capture to come back to me time and time again. There is something special about that I think.
